What to expect with a consultation with Dr Heydon
-
Dr Heydon can be seen at a number of practice locations. A referral is necessary from either your GP or optometrist, so that you may claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation or any resulting treatment.
The practice will send you some documentation prior to the day of consultation. This will outline what tests may be necessary, an outline of fees and charges and expected duration of your appointment. You may also need to fill out a Patient Information Sheet with your details and medical history.
Please bring a list of your current medications, any glasses what you use and any other health information that you think may be useful.
In most cases, you will need to be given drops on the day that dilate your pupil so the eyes can be examined properly. This means your vision will be blurry for a few hours afterwards, and it is recommended that you don’t drive to the appointment in this case, and arrange alternate transport.
-
On the day, you will be first examined by the orthoptist at the practice, who will ask about the reason for your visit, your medical history, family medical history and other relevant information needed for Dr Heydon. Your visual acuity will be measured on an eye chart and also you intraocular pressure. At this point, dilating drops may be administered to your eyes to allow a thorough examination.
-
Further testing of the eyes is then undertaken in a nearby room. This generally involves taking OCT and photos of the retina, macula and optic nerves. Measurements of the eye will be taken if you are preparing for cataract surgery. Visual field testing is commonly performed if a glaucoma workup is being performed.
-
After the examination and measurements have been performed with the orthoptist, you will then see Dr Heydon. He will take a history from you, examine the eyes and look over all your test results. He will also discuss your condition and treatment options. Please feel welcome to ask any questions you may have about any aspect of your visit, condition or treatment offered.
